For this project, I've created 8 dioramas in total.
I started recruiting participants (from different backgrounds, age, gender, class), sending out Google forms to collect photos and general information, and connecting with them virtually.
With the intention of focusing on diversity and exploring identities, I have recreated their personal spaces that they have established after moving to Canada or being born in Canada as a first/second generation. Learning about their cultural background traditions, their life as an individual and/or with families, and their identities as part of the diverse communities of “Canada'', I depicted each individual in their personal space, surrounded by objects that they identified themselves with. Through the intimate conversations and careful observation of their spaces, I was able to create the dioramas as their self-portraits.
This project was funded by Ontario Arts Council Grant - Visual Artists Creation Projects.

Breathe is an animated short film intended to fire the imaginations of people around the world as Covid continues to wreak havoc.
Covid has exposed with brutal clarity the brokenness of our social, economic and political systems. It has driven many to the very edge of their capacity to survive and tested our solidarity and resilience to its limits. And it has sparked imaginations for a radically different future, more equal and sustainable than the past, as we glimpsed a world in which nothing seemed inevitable anymore and we came face to face with our vulnerability.
We found we could not take for granted even our ability to breathe. We could not breathe near each other for fear of the virus. We became aware in powerful new ways how the toxicity of our atmosphere is choking us. And in the simple and powerful cry of George Floyd's 'I can't breathe', the suffocating power of racism and a centuries old system of oppression was brought back into focus. We need to imagine a different future. One in which we can breathe. We need a vision that is equal to the scale of opportunity, which speaks to our collective hunger for a more just world and for a healthy relationship with our planet.
There is power in narratives which help people to imagine and to believe.
